n a recent interview, Dr. Taling Tene Rodrigue, Cameroonian scholar and head of the Center for African Film & TV at Zhejiang Normal University’s Institute of African Studies, reflected on China’s development journey and its potential insights for African nations. Having lived in China for over a decade, Dr. Rodrigue has observed first-hand the country’s rapid advancements and the valuable lessons it could offer African countries in areas from technology to cultural exchange.

Dr. Rodrigue, who joined fellow African scholars in co-signing a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressed appreciation for China’s commitment to Africa and the inclusiveness of its leadership. “We are honored to know that the top leadership is taking into account the voices of thinkers,” he noted, emphasizing the growing importance of China-Africa cooperation as both regions navigate their development goals.

Driven by a passion for fostering mutual understanding, Dr. Rodrigue draws on his personal experiences to bridge cultural gaps between Africa and China. His love for Chinese culture, originally sparked by watching Kung Fu movies as a child, inspired him to work in film and media to share the story of modern China with African audiences. While those early films left a lasting impression, he acknowledged that they often presented an outdated image of China. Now, he hopes to convey the full scope of contemporary China’s achievements, especially to the youth.

“Culture defines people,” Dr. Rodrigue emphasized, underscoring the power of film to connect and inspire. He believes China’s unique approach to development has contributed to the country’s progress in areas like science, technology, and the economy. He sees China’s resilience and commitment to pursuing its own path as qualities that could encourage African countries to explore innovative approaches tailored to their distinct contexts.

As Africa and China continue to strengthen ties, Dr. Rodrigue envisions a future where both regions can build a resilient partnership founded on shared goals and mutual respect. Through cultural and academic exchanges, he hopes to deepen this collaboration and foster a greater understanding between African and Chinese communities.
